Sensei Mike Schultz

Sensei Mike Schultz began his martial arts training in 1995 in Jukido Jujitsu at Brandeis University under Senseis Johanna and Len Glazer, and shortly thereafter began an intensive study of Kokondo Karate. After his graduation from Brandeis in 1996, he continued practicing at the Brandeis Kokondo Academy under Master Daniel Cohen. He earned his Jukido Shodan (black belt) in 1999 and Karate shodan in 2000. He is currently ranked Nidan (2nd degree black belt) in Jukido Jujitsu and Nidan in Kokondo Karate.

After serving as an assistant instructor for several years at the Brandeis Kokondo Academy, Sensei Schultz earned his Teaching Certification and became the Chief Instructor of Babson Kokondo Karate and Jukido Jujitsu dojo in 2001. His students included undergraduates from Babson College, undergraduate students from Olin College of Engineering, a diverse array of international MBA students, and members of the Babson community. Sensei Schultz is now co-chief instructor of the Babson Kokondo Karate and Jukido Jujitsu dojo with Sensei Dean Ierardi.

Aside from his regular training at Brandeis with Master Cohen and Sensei Steve Lisauskas, Sensei Schultz studies with Shihan Arel at the Connecticut Yudanshakai (black belt club) classes, and has received focused attention from Master Greg Howard, Master Scott Cohen, Master Rob Robert, Sensei Jim Scanlon, and European Sensei Vesa Toropainen during their frequent visits to Brandeis. Sensei Schultz has attended a number of International seminars since 1997, and intensive regional seminars such as in Bakersfield, CA in 2005.

With a balanced blend of jujitsu and karate, Mr. Schultz favors a no-nonsense approach to Kokondo self-defense. A fan of techniques that are direct and to the point, his three favorite throws include: uke waza, harai-tsurikomi-ashi, and kata guruma, while Henka III and Seeinchin rank among his favorite karate kata.

Outside of Budo, Sensei Schultz’s academic background includes a BA in American Studies from Brandeis University in 1996 and an MBA from Babson College in 2002. He has worked as management consultant since the mid 1990's, and for a number of years as Director of Training and Education Partnerships for Linkage, Inc., working alongside Master Cohen. Together, they successfully developed and sold a variety of Human Resources and Leadership programs and client solutions.

Since 2002 Sensei Schultz has been a Principal with the Wellesley Hills Group and Publisher of RainToday.com, both of which, in good Babson tradition, he founded. His other interests include golf and fly-fishing.
